Visitor driving rule
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYes, if you live in the UK and are visiting Ireland you can drive on your UK licence for up to a year.
The UK is on Ireland's list of recognised states, and Citizens Information confirms that UK residents visiting Ireland can drive there on their UK licence. Licences from recognised states are valid for driving in Ireland for up to 1 year when visiting, as long as the licence itself is current.

International Driving Permit
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiNo, an international driving permit is not needed. Your UK licence on its own is enough when visiting Ireland.
Citizens Information states that UK residents visiting Ireland can drive with their UK licence. Ireland's international driving permit requirement only applies to licences from countries outside the EU, the EEA and the recognised states list, and the UK is a recognised state.

New resident deadline
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiOnce you live in Ireland you can no longer drive on a UK licence. You must exchange it for an Irish one.
Citizens Information is explicit that people living in Ireland can no longer drive on a UK licence and must exchange it for an Irish licence. You are normally resident if you live in Ireland for at least 185 days in a calendar year. No grace period is published, so apply for the exchange as soon as you settle.

License exchange
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYes, a UK licence can be exchanged for an Irish licence without taking any driving tests. The exchange costs 65 euro.
The UK (and Northern Ireland separately) is on Ireland's post-Brexit list of recognised states for licence exchange, so a full UK licence swaps directly for an Irish one through the NDLS. You must exchange the licence within 1 year of its expiry date, and only full licences qualify, not provisional ones. The standard fee is 65 euro and it is free if you are 70 or over.

Testing requirements
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiNo theory test or driving test is needed to exchange a UK licence, but you must submit a completed eyesight report with the application.
Exchanging a licence from a recognised state such as the UK does not involve the driver theory test or the driving test. Ireland does require a completed eyesight report when you apply to exchange a licence issued by a recognised state, and a medical report in some cases.

Translation requirements
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiNo, a UK licence does not need a translation. It is already in English.
UK licences are issued in English, and no translation appears in the list of documents Ireland asks for when exchanging a licence from a recognised state. The NDLS may contact the UK licensing authority directly to verify the licence, which can add some processing time.

Documents to bring
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiBring your UK licence, proof of your PPS number, photo ID, proof of address, an eyesight report and the 65 euro fee to exchange the licence at an NDLS centre or online.
You can apply online with a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID, or in person by appointment at an NDLS centre. If you do not hand over your UK licence, the exchange application is rejected. The NDLS may need to contact the UK authority that issued the licence, which can lengthen processing.
