Visitor driving rule
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYes, visitors can drive in Ireland on a Nigerian licence for up to 12 months, but only if they also carry an international driving permit.
Nigeria is not on Ireland's list of recognised states, so the general rule for other foreign licences applies: you may drive for up to 12 months as a visitor if your licence is valid and you also hold an international driving permit from your country. Citizens Information confirms this rule for licences issued outside the EU, the EEA and the recognised states.

International Driving Permit
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYes, an international driving permit is required alongside a Nigerian licence when visiting Ireland.
Ireland's international driving permit rule depends on the issuing country, not the licence language. Because Nigeria is outside the EU, the EEA and the recognised states list, visitors may only drive if they hold both their Nigerian licence and an international driving permit issued in their country.

New resident deadline
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYou can drive for up to 12 months from arrival on a Nigerian licence with an international driving permit, but if you stay longer than 12 months you must get an Irish licence.
Citizens Information states that anyone planning to stay in Ireland for more than 12 months must apply for an Irish driving licence, which for Nigerian licence holders means the full licensing process. You count as normally resident once you live in Ireland for at least 185 days in a calendar year, so it is worth starting the process early because it takes several months.

License exchange
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiNo, a Nigerian licence cannot be exchanged for an Irish licence because Nigeria is not one of Ireland's recognised states.
Ireland's recognised states for licence exchange are the EU and EEA countries plus Australia, Canada (certain provinces), Georgia, Gibraltar, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Japan, Jersey, Moldova, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Taiwan and the UK. Nigeria is not on this list, so the licence cannot be swapped and the holder must go through the full Irish driver licensing process, starting with the driver theory test.

Testing requirements
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiYou must pass the driver theory test, get a learner permit with an eyesight report, complete 6 Essential Driver Training lessons and pass the Irish driving test.
Because a Nigerian licence cannot be exchanged, new residents start with the driver theory test and then apply to the NDLS for a learner permit, which requires a satisfactory eyesight report. Holders of a full licence from a country without an exchange agreement with Ireland take only 6 Essential Driver Training lessons instead of the usual 12 before booking the driving test with the Road Safety Authority.

Translation requirements
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiNo certified translation is needed, because a Nigerian licence cannot be exchanged and there is no licence application to translate.
Visitors must carry an international driving permit with the Nigerian licence, which covers translation needs on the road. New residents apply for an Irish licence from scratch through the theory test and learner permit route, and no licence translation appears among the documents Ireland asks for in that process.

Documents to bring
Verified July 11, 2026 by Andrei ZakhareuskiBring a theory test pass certificate, an eyesight report, proof of residence and ID to apply for a learner permit, and keep your Nigerian licence to qualify for the shorter driver training course.
To apply for a first learner permit you must be normally resident in Ireland, meet the minimum age and hold a driver theory test pass certificate dated within 2 years, plus a satisfactory eyesight report dated within one month. A new learner permit costs 45 euro. Holding a full licence from a non-exchange country reduces Essential Driver Training from 12 lessons to 6.
